Landscape Certification Program
For several years, the Kiawah Island Community Association (KICA) has published a document titled, “Landscape Guidelines for Association Members.” This document is a series of steps to guide our
membership in preserving, as much as possible, the native landscape and wildlife habitat on
Kiawah Island.
KICA just recently updated these guidelines, and in the process it was discovered that some of our membership, as well as most of our contractors, were not even aware that this document existed.
Starting this year, all landscape service contractors will be required to review these guidelines
and take a test. The test is composed of a series of 10 questions in different categories to gauge your knowledge of the guidelines. You must past this test in order to receive vehicle passes that will allow admittance/access to the island.
One representative from your company will be asked to take and pass the test. If you have a company with multiple landscape operations, for example, an installation and maintenance division, a representative from each will be required to take the test. Additionally, arborists, landscape architects and those who do land clearing will be asked to take the test.
Upon completion of the test, the names of the companies will be put on the KICA website as certified contractors. There will be penalties for not adhering to these quidelines, the most severe of which being the revocation of your vehicle access pass.
The community association believes that these quidelines are very important to the preservation of Kiawah Island’s natural landscape and wildlife habitat. We also realize that it is a combined effort, which includes our membership, the community association, all other entities on the island and most importantly you the service providers. We cannot accomplish this goal without your participation.
Once again, thank you for your commitment to preserving Kiawah natural landscapes and wildlife habitats.
