The Sandcastle Story

The Kiawah Island Community Association's Community Center is affectionately known as the Sandcastle. On August 4, 1996, KICA members got their first tour of the then-new recreation center and pool. The distinctive 9,600 square foot sandcastle design featured unparalleled views from the second floor main lounge and deck of the Atlantic Ocean.

In November of 2006, the Sandcastle underwent a major renovation to its first-floor facilities, increasing usable space in the main building to 11,700 square feet. As part of the project, a seasonal snack bar, the Castle Grille, was added to the pool area.  Throughout the construction, the Sandcastle doors remained open to the public, and classes and groups met as usual.  Memorial Day of 2007, the beautifully revamped facility was unveiled to the public.

The Sandcastle foyer has a palatial feel, with marbleized tile and a reception desk complete with granite surface. This aura of elegance carries throughout the building, where accents of jade and black are found throughout the first floor of the building.  In the hallway, an elaborate glass sculpture of blue herons receives prominent display.

The Sandcastle building houses a large fitness center, with weight and cardio machines, as well as a multi-purpose fitness classroom.  There is also a lending library with the best selection of gently loved books on the island.  Upstairs, there are three banquet rooms that can accommodate parties of 10 or 180.

The grounds contain a large pool, children's wading pool, covered picnic pavilion, playground area, sun deck overlooking the beach, and the Castle Grille. It's a fun place to be!
